Downpayment Assistance

Down Payment Assistance

We know that coming up with the down payment can sometimes be the hardest part of buying a home. NeighborWorks® Housing Solutions (NHS) provides homebuyer counseling to help buyers determine the right loan or grant program for them from a variety of down payment assistance programs available in Massachusetts.  We also help facilitate the process from start to finish to help you get into your new home.

What You Need to Know

  • Down Payment financial assistance is for first-time homebuyers or those who haven’t owned a property in three or more years.
  • Funds are available on a first come, first served basis and are not guaranteed.
All programs have different guidelines and qualifications.
  • Down Payment incentives are often referred to as a “grant”, but not all down payment programs are forgivable. Some loans are 0% forgivable — meaning you will need to pay back the amount of assistance received once you sell, transfer title, or refinance — and some are deferred payment loans; it all depends on the funding source. Please refer to the application for each community for these details.
