Job Description:

The Family Shelter - Housing Search Counselor and Case Manager will work as a team for all participants in the Family Shelter Program. The Housing Search Counselor will work with each family on the subjects of budgeting and applying for permanent housing. Additionally, the Housing Search Counselor will assist with the setup of units which includes restocking the units as they become vacant, making recommendations for replacement items, notifying landlords of any repair problems and ensuring the prompt placement into vacant units.

• Develop monthly budget with participants
• Address budgeting issues with the participant
• Review past credit with each family
• Obtaining a credit report and creating a plan to pay past debt
• Assist participant with locating safe, secure, affordable housing
• Advising clients of open Section 8 waits lists
• Assist with completing applications and gathering necessary verification
• Advising family participants of available units with or without a subsidy
• Assist in transportation to apply for and view available units
• Provide the participant with tenancy skills
• Development of references and any other service necessary to assist the participant obtain and maintain housing
• Assist the Case Manager in developing an individualized housing search plan
• Establish long range plans to facilitate self-sufficiency – included budgeting, education, job training and employment
• Maintain files with necessary notes/documentation
• Develop and maintain a knowledge and network of landlords, property managers and social service agencies
• Attend weekly program meeting to discuss ongoing cases
• Visit clients weekly – to inspect for tenancy skills and adherence to program rules and regulations
• Will be available for rotating on-call coverage evening and weekend hours

Job Requirements & Skills:

• Customer Service Knowledge
• Ability to maintain client files and confidentiality
• Effective written and verbal communication
• Experience fostering cooperative working relationships with outside entities and other staff departments
• Ability to create and maintain relationships with a network of landlords and property managers
• Ability to use standard office equipment (computer, phone, hands free headset) to perform searches
• Ability to compile information into reporting for clients and for organizational data tracking
• Bi-lingual skills are preferred for this role, as we serve a diverse community with many language needs

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/ experience in housing administration and/or human services
• Experience with client centered coaching based on client’s strengths and interests, needs and barriers
• Acquire knowledge of Family Shelter program rules and regulations
Acquire knowledge of State and Federal regulations related to Housing Solutions operations, policies and procedures
• Ability to document all meetings and progress in case files
Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft platforms
Ability to interact with people of different social, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
Effective communications skills both verbal and written
Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with other service agencies and clients
• Valid driver’s license
