Residential Assistance to Families in Transition (RAFT)

The RAFT program is funded by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and provides short-term, limited financial assistance for eligible families facing:

  • Eviction notice
  • Doubled up in a must-leave situation
  • Condemned housing that is no longer habitable
  • Foreclosure proceedings resulting in loss of housing
  • Severe overcrowding
  • Fire, flood, or other natural disaster
  • Domestic violence
  • Mortgage or rent arrears
  • Other crises that will result in loss of housing within 30 days

Not every household facing foreclosure or eviction is eligible for RAFT funds. The program is designed for families and individuals whose income is at or below 50% of the area median income with a percentage of funding targeted to those whose incomes are below 30% of area median income.  This funding is available to eligible Massachusetts residents, regardless of immigration status.

What to Expect

The quickest way to start the screening process is by using the online portal link here. If you are unable to complete the form online, please leave a message on our RAFT hotline at 781.422.4204 and our staff will call back to assist you in the order your message was received.

Once you have submitted the completed form, a RAFT specialist will review and call to complete your screening.

Once eligibility is determined, you can expect that we will be requesting additional documentation, such as income verification and landlord and property information.

If you are homeless or in a doubled-up situation, we will send you an Intent to Rent Packet so you can get started searching for an appropriate apartment unit within the 30-day deadline. Once you find a unit, call the RAFT line (781-422-4204) or email your RAFT specialist to set a time to review the documents.

When all of the required documentation has been submitted, your RAFT specialist will then input and submit your application for review and processing.
